Forced marriages denying Kwale girls education

Residents in Kwale have been urged to ensure girls are well educated.

This follows cases of forced and early marriages in Samburu’s Chengoni area.

Mdzomba Nyawa a member of the Kanjaocha primary school Board of Management said more than 15 girls have been forced into marriage with the majority from grades three to six.

“It is heartbreaking to see most girls from the age of 13 getting married to men of double their ages,” said Nyawa.

The BoM Member claimed village elders were involved in the early marriages in the area.

Nyawa now wants security agencies, the Department of Gender, and the Children Department to take legal action against those encouraging early and forced marriages in the area.

“Most of the girls are denied their right to education due to forced marriages,” he said.
