Kenya enhances border security to combat Mpox, Marburg & Ebola

Kenya has enhanced its border security to combat Mpox, Marburg, and Ebola viruses.

Among the measures taken by the country is strengthening disease surveillance and response at entry points including the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

According to Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, reinforced border screening, rapid response mechanisms, and public awareness are essential to preventing disease importation and safeguarding public health even as the country faces Mpox outbreak and the region grapples with Marburg and Ebola threats.

PS Muthoni was speaking when she visited JKIA alongside World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo and International Organization for Migration Chief Migration Officer Basnet Mukunda to engage the Border Management Committee on strengthening disease surveillance and response.

“Kenya remains committed to protecting public health through proactive surveillance and emergency preparedness. By working closely with global partners, we are strengthening our capacity to detect and respond to disease threats at our borders,” said PS Muthoni.

To enhance surveillance, Terminal 1A, Gate 16 has been designated as the sole entry point for travelers from Uganda and Tanzania, where Marburg and Ebola cases have been reported.

“A multi-agency strategy is being implemented to operationalize the Kenya Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan across all Points of Entry,” said the PS.

Meanwhile, WHO and IOM reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Kenya in fortifying emergency response efforts, ensuring the country is well-prepared to address emerging health challenges.
