A group of fishermen in Kilifi County has threatened to take legal action against the government over what they claim is a failure to involve them in the planned construction of an oceanic wall.
According to the fishermen, the wall will extend from the Vuma area through Takaungu to Bofa, a development they say will disrupt their daily activities.
Speaking to the media in Kilifi Town on Wednesday, the fishermen expressed frustration over the lack of public engagement regarding the project.
“We have not been consulted in the construction of this wall. This initiative will negatively impact our livelihoods,” said Captain Shallo Issa.
He alleged that only senior members of the Beach Management Units (BMUs) had been involved, leaving out the fishermen who would be directly affected.
Kombo Sharif, a lead fisherman from Bofa, called on leaders to abandon the project, arguing that the area is not suitable for such a structure.
“The Bofa area does not have the capacity to support an oceanic wall. If such a project must be undertaken, it should be in Malindi, Watamu, or Mtwapa,” Kombo stated.
Meanwhile, Juma Ngumbao, a fish vendor from Kilifi Town, warned that the project could lead to increased insecurity in the region.
“I fear that areas like Takaungu, Kilifi, and Bofa might experience rising cases of insecurity,” Ngumbao said.
The fishermen are now calling on authorities to reconsider the initiative and ensure proper consultation with all affected stakeholders.
